Track the Orangutans in the Wild is a Private Tour that explores the natural habitat of the orangutans and other unique wildlife species you must not miss in Borneo. 

On this tour you will travel deep into the dense jungle of Kinabatangan River and Danum Valley in search of wild orangutans – the largest primate in Asia.

This amazing adventure in Borneo will give you the unforgettable thrill of seeing wild animals roaming freely through spectacular rainforest.

Highlights

  • Experience a wonderful Safari River Cruise on the Kinabatangan River. The lower basin is the largest forest covered floodplain in Borneo and has the largest concentration of wildlife in Southeast Asia.
  • Explore the Gomantong Forest Reserve and Cave home of millions of birds and bats. The dense forest of the reserve is orangutans' natural habitat.
  • Venture to Danum Valley Conservation Area to witness its incredible biodiversity and pristine rainforest. You will have the chance to see orangutans, many species of birds and endemic plants, both from the ground as well as high up in the tree canopy.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive in Sandakan - Gomantong Caves - Sukau

Meet at Sandakan airport or at your hotel and transfer for about 2.5 hours through rustic countryside and palm oil plantation to Sukau village on the Kinabatangan River.

Enroute visit Gomantong Forest Reserve, home to many species of wildlife including orangutans.
Walk 10 minutes through rainforest on a wooden boardwalk to the entrance of Gomantong Caves. The cave are famed for its their edible bird’s nests, a delicacy in Asian cuisine.
Explore the cave along an elevated wooden platform. Learn about the ecosystem and see resident creatures such as swiftlets and bats.

Proceed to Sukau and take a short boat ride to the lodge. After a brief orientation, you will be given free time to freshen up before lunch.

Late afternoon, embark on a scenic 2-hour river safari on the Kinabatangan River in search of wildlife. If you are lucky you can spot orangutans, elephants, proboscis monkeys and crocodiles. Return to the lodge for dinner.

Day 2Kinabatangan River Sukau

Wake up early morning by the call of gibbon and the sound of hornbills.

Embark on 1.5-hour safari river cruise to Kelenanap Oxbow Lake. If weather permits, takea short jungle walk and experience the wilderness of Borneo before returning to the lodge for breakfast.

The rest of the morning is at your leisure to explore the surrounding areas or relax at the lodge.

Late afternoon embark on another 2-hour safari river cruise along the Kinabatangan River or Menanggul River.

Day 3Sukau - Danum Valley

Early morning transfer to Danum Valley Conservation Area office in Lahad Datu (about 2-hour drive). Then after registration continue to Borneo Rainforest Lodge (about 2.5-hour drive).

Enjoy the changing landscape of the regenerated forest to virgin rainforest of a million years old.
Borneo Rainforest Lodge is nestled in the heart of Sabah’s largest protected forest, alongside the Danum River.
The entire Danum Valley Conservation Area is a primary rainforest, which means it has never been logged before and is completely untouched.

After a brief orientation and lunch, proceed for a guided walk along the Nature Trail for an introduction to the rainforest ecosystem.

In the evening see a slide presentation on Danum Valley Conservation Area, then join a night safari on an open-air truck. Using a powerful spot light the guide will point out nocturnal species.

Day 4Danum Valley

Rise early this morning and enjoy a whole day in the beautiful Danum Valley. Start your day with the Canopy Walkway, a rope-style bridge built 26 meters above the forest floor. The view is magical. In the early mornings, mist hangs over the rainforest, forming a white veil from which only the tallest treetops emerge.

After breakfast hike to View Point Trail and Kadazandusun Burial Site. Stop along the trail to admire the variety of flora and fauna and spectacular views.
On the way down, enjoy a refreshing dip in the natural Jacuzzi pool.

After lunch (if weather permits) enjoy an extended hike to look for orangutan, birds and other wildlife along nature trails or go for a relaxing Water Tubing session down the Danum River.

As darkens falls, proceed for a guided night jungle walk in search of nocturnal species.

Day 5Danum Valley

After breakfast trek to Fairy and Serpent Falls.

After lunch, if weather permits, go for another guided trek along the Segama River.

In the evening you will have the opportunity to join another night safari on an open-air truck.

Day 6Danum Valley - Depart Lahad Datu

This morning enjoy a short jungle walk. After lunch, check out and transfer to Lahad Datu airport.
